A piano has number of features. Looking at the grandeur of the black and white keys, we often disregard the pedals down there who become the ultimate saviour to the music of piano. It helps in keeping the music going even when our fingers are lifted from the keys.
Let’s befriend the ‘piano saviour’s: Piano Pedals
There are 3 piano pedals near the foot of the pianist. They are the right one, left one and the middle one. Each one of it, has its own assigned purpose. Every part and its functions of a piano can be understood and mastered with proper guidance. At Music Lounge, music academy with online keyboard classes in Qatar, we provide guidance from the basics to be a master.
Damper or Sustain Pedal: Right One.
Among the 3 pedals, the right one is the damper or sustain pedal. As its name speaks, it serves the purpose of sustaining the musical notes. It allows the notes to blend easily and create beautiful sound. Dampers are small felt pads, that rests against the metal strings in your piano. When you press a key, individual damper of the key raises to allow the piano string to vibrate and create sound. When you release the key, damper rests against the strings again and sound stops. Thus, pressing the damper pedal with your foot raises all the dampers to sustain every note you play to make sound even when you are not pressing the key.
Soft Pedal or Una Corda: Left One
It is technically referred to as Una Corda pedal, but resembles to its unofficial name, soft pedal, as it is capable to produce soft sounds. Pressing the Una Corda Pedal, the entire hammer system, of the piano shifts to the right. It strikes at only the two strings out of three strings of each key. And as it is also struck by a different part of the hammer, it produces sound much softly and sparsely resonating notes. You can use the soft pedal when you want your sound of the piano to be lighter.
Sostenuto Pedal: Central or middle pedal
It is a selective sustain pedal to hold already playing notes to keep playing. Sostenuto Pedal is recently added one to allow you to lengthen the resonance and some notes and have harmonic feature in others. On some upright pianos, it lowers the piece of felt between the hammers and the strings to produce very soft and muffled sound. Hence, it is called practice pedal, to practice piano by not disturbing others.
